Error -36 Message while iPhoto Library Backup to External Drive

Taking the backup is a very important process that always makes sure that you have kept the data safely. If anything wrong occurs then you will have the backup files from where you can get them all once again and be prevented from the data loss. In the latest versions of Mac OS X, an application named Time Machine has been introduced that is capable to take the incremental backup time to time to make sure the data will never be lose. But still if you have resources to keep your data more safely then you can try the external backup. Like in iPhoto, all the files are stored in its library named iPhoto library. If your iPhoto Library becomes big enough and you think that you don't need all the pictures on Your Mac then you can take the external backup of iPhoto Library.

In the process of backup iPhoto Library to external media, you can face problems if one or more of the files have been corrupted. The Error is:

" The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "xxxxx.jpg" could not be read or written. (Error Code -36) "

The problem can be solved if you manually delete the photos and try to take the backup once again but if there are numerous pictures or the picture that have been corrupted is important for you then you can't go for its deletion.

Solution

In this situation first of all check the permissions on those files and verify whether if they have permissions of read or write or not. If these file permissions are not easy for you then you can try some 3rd party utilities like Batchmod to manipulate file and folder privileges in Mac OSX.

If the application doesn't solve this problem then you can go for the Disk Utility to verify if the HD is OK or not. More of the times the errors or bad sectors present in the disk cause these problems of image or iPhoto library corruption. In case the disk utility does not give you the solution, you need to use a professional solution for iPhoto named as iPhoto Recovery.
